These notes address:

Session: Paradise Under Treat: safeguarding and enhancing the local cultural economy in the rural landscapes of Mallorca, Crete and Samoa

Address flood threats to protect rural landscape heritage and enhance cultural tourism.  Dexell Aita outlined the impacts of flood treats to Apia Samoa. He described the importance of tourism as the main income earner for Samoa, and Apia the capital city; the destruction caused by floods and the hard engineering solutions used to address flooding. He presented a staged plan for moving from flood prone areas, and developing local tourism walkways which included cultural activities, as well as using natural solutions including native plants and previously used channels for establishing resilience and water detention.
